IIT Mandi- The Indian Institute of Technology Mandi has introduced a Master's program in Electric Transportation. It is a collaborative program between the School of Engineering (SE) and the School of Computing and Electrical Engineering (SCEE) at IIT Mandi. The first batch of the course will commence in August 2022.

About the course

It is a master-level course in electrical transportation. The duration of the program by IIT Mandi is two years. According to IIT Mandi, the program has been designed keeping in mind the electrification of transportation in India to promote a sustainable and more hygienic environment in India.

NITI Aayog prompted the discussion in July 2020 and requested IIT Mandi for its active participation. The IIT Mandi stated that the Transportation system in India is on the path to electrification, and forthcoming power systems need to optimize the usage of convertible renewable power sources. The charging of electric vehicles raises additional electricity demand in India. IIT added that they can imaginably achieve this goal cost-effectively and practically with renewable energy, including solar and wind supplied to the grid. These challenges have opened the door to new career opportunities in engineering and technology in India and worldwide. At the end of the statement, IIT clarified that the new program launched by IIT Mandi is designed while keeping all the circumstances and aspects in consideration.

The program coordinator of IIT Mandi, Dr. Narsa Reddy Tummuru, and Chairperson School of Computing and Electrical Engineering, Dr. Samar, spoke about the importance of this program- "The MTech in Electric transportation has been designed in alignment with the purposes of the initiative carried by the Government of India to cater the expanding demand of skilled and well-qualified personnel in the electric vehicle industry for both the new and the existing entrepreneurs".
