On Monday, vice chancellor Umesh Rai announced that the University of Jammu has recently decided to take a landmark initiative by commencing mountain and snow craft and disaster management courses/programmes for soldiers and officers of the Indian army.

He said the University of Jammu and the High Altitude Warfare School (HAWS), Gulmarg, will sign an agreement today, May 3, 2023.

Umesh Rai said while acknowledging the experiential learning and rigorous training of the Army personnel and their contribution to the nation, the university is taking a landmark initiative by beginning certificate, diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate courses/programmes in mountain craft and disaster management and snow craft and disaster management for the army personnel and officers.

He said the university would also begin three skill-based certificate courses in cooperation with High Altitude Warfare School (HAWS), Gulmarg, in disaster management with an emphasis on search, rescue, and survival snow craft and avalanche rescue, and rock craft and mountain rescue for its learners.

Rai said these courses would be jointly run by the Disaster Management Centre of the Geology Department and the High Altitude Warfare School.
