Kerala: General Education Minister Introduced a New Interactive Device For Digital Studies
Kerala General Education Minister V. Sivankutty introduced the ‘KITE Board’ application, which is a multi-purpose, device-independent, FOSS-based, interactive device that would enable teachers with hassle-free use of hi-tech equipment in classrooms. The KITE Board also promotes the storage of content written on Blackboard by the teacher in PDF form- a characteristic that would help students unable to attend a class. It also records activities done on the Board using the screen recording feature.

On Saturday, Kerala General Education Minister V. Sivankutty introduced the ‘KITE Board’ application, which is a multi-purpose, device-independent, FOSS-based, interactive device that would enable teachers with hassle-free use of hi-tech equipment in classrooms.

In a statement, Sivankutty said that the KITE Board is the latest contribution of the State which has already made a digital revolution by utilizing only Free Software in the Education sector, and the new addition would support the creation of an amusing fresh learning environment in classrooms.

The KITE Board also promotes the storage of content written on Blackboard by the teacher in PDF form- a characteristic that would help students unable to attend a class. It also records activities done on the Board using the screen recording feature.

Several classroom activities, such as science experiments, can be captured or recorded using the built-in camera of the Laptop, which can then be displayed via the KITE Board.

K. Anvar Sadath, CEO of KITE, stated they had made necessary configurations to confirm the availability of the KITE Board application (APP) in all laptops in schools as a no-frills (simple) upgrade parallel to the deployment of E-Language Lab software.

The new application for the KITE Board would be introduced to all School IT coordinators during the ‘Techie Teacher’ residential IT training in October.

The KITE Board, designed and developed by (KITE) Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education, is a FOSS- Free Software- the based application which does not require hardware like expensive interactive boards available in the market and can be used as part of the KITE/GNU Linux 20.04 Operating System available in about two lakh laptops in 16,000 schools, deployed as an element of the Hi-Tech projects.

With the help of a KITE Board, teachers can write and type using a laptop. Teachers can also project them in classrooms using a projector, the same as using a Blackboard. It is a remarkable and very unique feature of the application that teachers could pre-load the resources such as video, images, and presentations from the Samagra portal in the KITE Board, which can be used either online/offline as required.
