The Maharashtra State Education Department has issued notice to all divisional-level officials to fine Rs. 01 lakh to schools. The fine will be issued to the schools that have not implemented Marathi as a compulsory subject.

In June 2020, the Govt introduced the Maharashtra Compulsory Teaching and Learning of Marathi Language in Schools Act.

The schools affiliated under the state board has already started teaching Marathi, but non-state boards such as the Council of Indian School Certificate Examination, Central Board of Secondary Education, International Baccalaureate, National Institute of Open Schooling, and Cambridge Board International General Certificate of Secondary Education are yet to introduce the language.

These boards will have to implement Marathi in a phased manner for the students of Class 01 to 06.

In this ongoing academic session, the schools are required to teach the Marathi subject to the students of Class 01, Class 02, Class 06, and Class 07.

Under the law, the fine of up to Rs. 01 lakh can be issued for non-compliance.
