Every year on Aug 29, National Sports Day, also known as Rashtriya Khel Diwas, is observed across the country to encourage people to take part in sports.

The National Sports Day also commemorates the birth anniversary of 'Hockey Wizard' Major Dhyan Chand who was born on Aug 29, 1905. During his involvement, the Indian hockey team won gold medals in 03 consecutive Summer Olympics held in 1928, 1932, and 1936. In 1956, the Indian government awarded him with India's third-highest civilian honour, the Padma Bhushan.

Sports play a great deal in shaping life as it teaches us a lot of important life skills while also helps us in keeping our physical and mental health fit.

The main aim of the Day is to promote awareness about the sports' importance and leading a physically active life.

On this Day, the government launches various sports-related projects. India's Khelo India campaign was also launched on this Day by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018.

On Aug 06, 2021, PM Modi renamed the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, the highest sporting honour of the country, as Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.
