New Zealand decided to unveil its tight curfew after showing a positive recovery from Covid-19 after a long wait of 2 tough years. It is announced that all the fully vaccinated Australians are permitted to go home in a phased manner from 27th February. They are guided to have self-quarantined for at least 10 days at their own home.

It is reopening quickly; thus, many people face problems, especially college students, due to the long wait until their chances come. According to the report, around 5000 international students will be admitted into New Zealand at the exact time for the second semester of their graduation, which is planned to reopen around 3rd February. But the double of a community of this counts still needs to wait a long time, more upto October, to get into the campus, which would let them wait upto starting 2023 again.

This news of removing restrictions comes after a lot of criticism of Wellington’s controversy of shutting down border policy decided to have less impact on coronavirus by stopping its further spread by sealing borders. During the last two years, New Zealand was also one of the impacted countries by a novel coronavirus, which recorded the death of 53 people and around 17000 corona patients who were infected by this. Still, it managed such a small number compared to other countries’ cases due to their better policy of taking the instant decision of sealing borders and stopping further migration of any people overseas.

You won't believe it, but their policy was so tough that all the people from New Zealand’s overseas find it impossible to go to their home even from the last two years, having fewer cases in the country.

New Zealand's re-opening of borders mainly took place in total 5 stages of phases manner:

  • In the first and initial phase, all the fully vaccinated New Zealand people stocks in Australia can return home from 27 February.

  • In the second phase, all the jabbed citizens worldwide are permitted to return from 13 March. All the skilled workers are allowed at this same period. In this period, mainly skilled workers and travelers were given priority.

  • International students around 5000 are permitted to enter the country from 12 April onwards in the third phase of the opening border.

  • Many other visitors and all those Australians who are expected to travel visa-free across the border of New Zealand are estimated by July.

  • All those who want to cross the border by granting the normal visa, including students and various visitors, would start visiting the backcountry from October in the last phase.

But due to oncoming of a new hazardous variant of Omicron creates a possibility of rethinking during the last days of December, which causes delaying of peoples entry across border up to 6 weeks, and much foreign entry was put on hold for some time again.

According to the government’s promotional policy for international students, this unveiling announcement allowed rebuilding and reshaping. It means they were allowed to return and join their studies on campus, which will start from 2023 without any further problems to the educational sector.

This new opening plan is not compulsory to get fully vaccinated for traveling purposes or any hotel quarantine. Still, priority for home isolation is given much importance for about 10 days. Chris Whelan, who is the chief executive of universities of New Zealand, said that this announcement gave all eight members the comfort of much-needed certainty they wanted.

He further added there is a chance that some international university students will be allowed to attend the next second semester classes on the campus even though they know that only a small section of students are appealing to come back to campus.

It is unfortunate for New Zealand, which is even taking October, to get fully open for all international students compared to most affected countries like Australia, the UK, Canada, and the US, which are already fully open for international students without interruption. Thus according to the chief secretary, we are still lagging 1 year back in all comparison of reopening.

According to the Immigration Minister of Australia, Alex Hawke, many students return to their country. Around 7000 have arrived in the last week of January, which counts for about 56000 students who returned after removing the curb since late 2021. He further added that his department has got around 50000 applications asking for granting students visas around that period after opening continues. They had to make a separate department to deal with this issue.

In one conference, the private college representative community of Independent Tertiary Education Council Australia also accepted that the magical faster growth of border crossing enrollment is getting higher and higher day by day. According to the chief executive, Troy Williams, it is bad that the foreign education department of western Australia will not recover because of several restrictions imposed on them by their state government stance authority.

Due to long time closed borders of countries like Australia and New Zealand, there seems to be no doubt that a two years closure would affect overseas international students deferring from campus experience two all other competitive countries who had removed their restriction early.

This instant move of removing all these curbs results from continuous pressure created by overseas New Zealanders who want to return to the country. After that, only an announcement of the border to scrap restrictions came.

In one conference, Minister Chris Hipkins admitted that “This time is made so difficult when families are left with no option to live alone. All people found it difficult to get shelter where they were stuck because they were not allowed to return to their houses. There was a huge financial crisis for various families. All of this impacted everyone’s livelihood to a greater extent Which appears as one of the toughest and challenging jobs for all including the government to deal with the unpredictable crisis which has fallen”.

But finally, it’s reopening but still much time left when the chance of students would come.
