Today, December 7, 2023, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced new guidelines, endorsing the introduction of short-term skill development courses across higher educational institutions in accordance with the 2020 New Education Policy (NEP).
The main objective revolves around integrating practical skill development across various educational levels, aiming to bridge skill gaps and offer short-term, industry-aligned courses in Higher Educational Institutes (HEIs). The ultimate goal is to provide hands-on experience and specialized education.
Here are the highlights of the guidelines introduced by UGC
- Candidates who have completed the 10+2/senior secondary examination or its equivalent are eligible for admission to these short-term skill development courses in Higher Educational Institutes (HEIs).
- The courses will last from 3 to 6 months, focusing on practical learning and industry relevance.
- HEIs will implement a credit-linked system for structuring the courses, with each short-term skill development course consisting of a minimum of 12 credits and a maximum of 30 credits.
- The short-term skill development course must have a greater focus on practical learning.
- The maximum student intake per cohort for these courses should not exceed 60, ensuring better focus and quality of education.
- HEIs should maintain a faculty-student ratio of 1:30 or as per the institution's applicable standards.
HEIs are encouraged to offer courses in various domains such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, IoT, Data Science, Cloud Computing, Cyber Security, Digital Transformation, Electronics, 3D Printing, and Fashion Technology, among others.
Institutes must collaborate with Sector Skill Councils, industries, and training bodies to ensure course credibility, placement opportunities, and updated curriculum aligned with industry standards. HEIs are required to develop plans to facilitate employment opportunities and internships for students completing these short-term skill development courses, ensuring practical exposure and enhancing employability skills.
To stay current with industry trends, institutes are encouraged to update their course content periodically, ensuring relevance and adaptability to evolving industry demands.
