NIF- The New India Foundation has declared the 11th edition of its fellowships that support books documenting diverse aspects of the dynamic and rich landscape of India's post-Independence era.

Around 20-25 proposals will be shortlisted to meet with a jury that comprises superior people from the world of scholarship, social service, and business, and 5-10 fellowships will be granted. The NIF fellowship will offer an annual stipend of Rs 18 lakh to each recipient and will also provide editorial and administrative guidance throughout its course, from proposal to final publication.

The fellowships will be awarded for one year and are open to Indian nationals, including Indians currently living abroad. This year's jury includes Author and Social Scientist Niraja Jayal, Entrepreneurs Nadini Nilekani and Manish Sabharwal, and Historian Srinath Raghavan.

Bengaluru-based NIF stated that all the Fellowship-holders are anticipated to write 100% original books in English. Proposals should be directed towards publication and summarize a road map towards that destination. The foundation is irreligious as regards genre, theme, and ideology: the only requirement is that the proposed creations contribute to a complete understanding of Independent India. The statement added that thus, fellowship holders might prefer to write a memoir, a work of reportage, or a thickly footnoted academic study. Their books could be economics-oriented, politics-oriented, or culture-oriented. They could be extremely specific- an account of a single decade or a single region or wide-ranging such as a countrywide overview.

According to the NIF trustee Srinath Raghavan, The New India Foundation believes that India today is such a fascinating yet complex phenomenon that to get a hold of where we are and where we might be going, we need to approach it through many windows and vantage points. The last date for applying is December 31.

Since its beginning, the NIF Book Fellowships have resulted in the publication of various critically applauded books that have recorded several aspects of modern Indian history. These include:

  • Tagore's University by Swati Ganguly: A History of Visva-Bharati (1921-1961)

  • Bibi's Room by Nazia Akhtar: Hyderabadi Women and Twentieth Century Urdu Prose

  • The Life and Time of George Fernandes and Not Just Cricket by Rahul Ramagundam: A Journey of a Reporter Through Modern India.
