The Department of Social Justice and Empowerment has implemented major Pre and Post Matric Scholarship Schemes which are: 1) Pre Matric Scholarship Schemes for SC Students; 2) Post Matric Scholarship Schemes for SC Students; 3) Pre Matric Scholarship Schemes for OBC students, and 4) Pre and Post Matric Scholarship Schemes for OBC students.
Some important changes have been introduced by the Department in these schemes which are given below:
Pre Matric Scholarship Schemes for SC Students: Under the scheme, the funding pattern had been revised from the committed liability concept to a fixed sharing pattern of 60:40 between the Centre and the States which is 90:10 in the case of North-Eastern States. The Annual Family Income Limit had been increased as well from Rs. 02 lakh to Rs. 0.5 lakh along with the rates of maintenance allowances.
Post Matric Scholarship Schemes for SC Students: The Union Cabinet has approved the continuation and revision of the scheme from the 2020-21 year to the 2025-26 years. This revision includes the revision of funding pattern, focus on thepoorest households for enlistment under the scheme and the development of the IT framework for implementation of the scheme.
Pre Matric Scholarship Schemes for OBC students and Pre and Post Matric Scholarship Schemes for OBC students: The income limit has been changed. For the Pre Matric Scholarship Scheme, the income limit has increased from Rs. 01 lakh to Rs. 2.50 lakh/ annum whereas for Post Matric Scholarship Scheme, the limit has increased from Rs. 01.50 lakh to Rs. 2.50 lakh/ annum.
The 'Post Matric Scholarship Schemes for SC Students' current revision aims at providing scholarships to around 04 crore beneficiaries during the duration 2020-21 to 2025-26. All the States/ UTs have been advised to implement the provisions.
Rattan Lal Katariain, Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment shared the information in a written reply in Lok Sabha.
