The AU (Allahabad University), Prayagraj has commenced the process to equip its Central Library with RFID (Radio Frequency Identification System) to help users easily access any book from the huge stock of the library.

Along with the easy accessibility, the technology will also help in checking the book-theft. The varsity authorities have sent the proposal worth Rs. 1.10 Crore to the Ministry of Education and the set-up work will begin after sanctioning the funds.

The technology will be using a self-dissolving set of stripes that will be placed inside the book's pages, as per the official sources. These stripes will help users in tracing the books after placing the books on the machine to read its signals. The technology will also help users in making relevant entries on the software supporting each unique RFID.

The RFID's automated Material Handling Systems will also assist in accelerating the returning process to library shelves.

The RFID technology has its advantages as well as disadvantages, as notified by the senior faculty member. He also mentioned that the technology will be using a 'gate' to pass-through, whether the 'gate' is safe to access or not is debatable.
