The schools from Northern Ireland have been banned from recommending subjects through the WJEC, Welsh Exam Board. Peter Weir, Education Minister, claims the authority created 'uncertainty' for students by changing the grading of their qualifications this year.

The President of the Secondary Student Unions of Northern Ireland Cormac Savage also hit at the officials and said, "Uncertainty has been a recurring theme of young people in education through this pandemic. And this announcement is illogical." He further added that this unjustly curbs the options of students and teachers, placing students at a significant disadvantage as compared to peers in Wales and England who will maintain access to various exam boards.

In Northern Ireland, over one thousand students appear for WJEC exams every year in subjects like Computer Science, Sociology, PE, Media Studies, and Drama but 2021 year will be the last.

On Jan 26, the Daily Mirror's circular from the Department of Education states that the WJEC qualifications '' will no longer be approved for use in Northern Ireland schools' from September 2022.
