A satellite has been designed and developed by the students of Sri Shakti Institute of Engineering and Technology, Coimbatore at a cost of Rs. 2.5 Crore which would be inaugurated by Dr. R Sivan, Chairman of ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) on Jan 28, 2021.

Dr. Thangavel, Chairman of the Institute, reported that the twelve students of the institute, after being inspired by the formation of the institute by PM Narendra Modi, collaborated with ISRO to develop 'SriShaktiSat'.

For Space Programme Development, the Sri Shakti Sat Ground Station was installed in collaboration with Serbia-based Community, making the institute a member of the SATNOGS (Satellite Networked Open Ground Station) project, he further added.

Thangavel further added that the aim of the SATNOGS project is to provide technologies for a dispersed network of low earth orbit (LEO) satellit ground stations. He also informed that even though SriShaktiSat would weigh only 460 grams, it can function as good as other nano satellite weighing upto 10 kgs.

The satellite could be used as a technology demostrator for inter-satellite communication and for Internet of Things in space, he further notified. The satellite, after being virtually inaugurated, would be handed over in February to Indian Space Research Organisation for use.
