From the rural and urban areas, in 720 districts around 34 lakh students of 1.18 lakh schools have taken part in NAS 2021. The report analyzes the spirit of the school education system by executing a detailed evaluation survey of children's learning abilities in third, fifth, eighth, and tenth grade with a cycle period of three years. The previous NAS was held in 2017.

The government schools (central government and state government), government-aided schools, and private unaided schools were covered in the NAS 2021 which was held on November 12, 2021.

The aim of NAS 2021 is to analyze children's learning abilities, so that is easy to take relevant steps for remedial actions at different levels. This nationwide survey was operated by the Central Board Of Secondary Education(CBSE) in a single day at the same time. Through the technology platform, the survey was managed which was designed and developed by the National informatics center (NIC).

An OMR-based achievement test that includes multiple-choice questions (MCQs) was conducted for the third, fifth, eighth, and tenth grades so that they can capture students' ability of learning.
