The UCL (University College London) research team has developed a rapid Nucleic Acid Amplification Test for COVID-19. The tests have been developed by the i-sense group at the UCL.

The research team was led by Prof Rachel McKendry and the research has been funded by the EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council).

NAAT tests use RPA (Recombinase Polymerase Amplification) to detect multiple genes to make sure that the test is accurate. RPA is a selective isothermal and highly sensitive amplification technique which operates at 37 degree celsius to 42 degree celsius.

The approach offered by the NAAT uses an alternative to the standard lab-based PCR tests currently being used for COVID-19 detection. PCR takes longer to create results as it uses a thermocycler for temperature control.

However, RPA works under an isothermal amplification method that means it performs at constant temperature. Therefore, RPA needs minimal equipment to perform and make tests widely accessible.

This i-sense developed analysis also provides faster results.
