On Wednesday, UGC Chairman M Jagadesh Kumar held a meeting with multiple international publishers in order to discuss printing undergraduate textbooks in Indian languages.

UGC Chairman with representatives from Wiley India, Springer Nature, Taylor & Francis, Cambridge University Press India, Cengage India, and McGraw-Hill India. Kumar says that the representatives have expressed their willingness to actively participate in this mission of facilitating regional languages in the nation.

He tweeted that all the international publishers/representatives have expressed their readiness to partner in this national mission. UGC has created an Apex committee to design a road map and work towards bringing out texts in diverse Indian languages.

This meeting was held a few months after Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced textbooks for anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry in Hindi for first-year MBBS students in Madhya Pradesh. He also added at the function that the Prime Minister is converting the ‘brain drain’ into ‘brain gain’ by promoting and motivating Indian students to seek medical and technical education in Indian or regional languages.

In October, the (AICTE)- All India Council for Technical Education also introduced a calendar for outcome-based engineering book discussions. As a part of this calendar, the first series of discussions started on November 29 and will continue till January 31, 2023.
